Summary: Just what the doctor ordered!
Comment: I always make a point of reading the least rated star column first and always pay careful attention to what they say before making a purchase. That said, I have to say that the author has really explained the important facets really well and in easy to understand language. Of course the beginning must be a bit abstract to any beginner but if one just takes the time and perseveres, everything eventually fits into place and it is really quite easy to understand.
This book has helped me enormously to develop websites.

Summary: Disjointed
Comment: The problem with many of these software manuals is that they will often tell you WHAT to do, but fail to adequately specify WHY you're doing it in layman's terms, or fail to specify at any degree at all. Or sometimes if they do, it won't be until several chapters further on, and as a result the cohesion is damaged. Unfortunately, all of these problems are present within this book.

My other complaint is that I am now 1/3 into the text, and it still has not taught me how to design a site from scratch. I am constantly working off of elements that were already prepared for me and so the extent of my learning is limited. I won't say that this book was completely useless, but its helpfulness for beginners such as myself is highly questionable.

Summary: Just ok
Comment: Just okay. This book sort of goes about things like you have had Dreamweaver before. Instead of you starting off by scratch with a website and building on top of it, it starts you off with prebuilt templates that don't explain why or what is going on. Not the best but was required for a course I have. Wouldn't recommend.

Summary: Awful experience with this book
Comment: This was my textbook for a Dreamweaver course, and it was absolutely worthless in terms of teaching me how to create a Web site from scratch. The CD-Rom exercises are structured around a pre-built Web site. While the exercises were somewhat useful, I learned absolutely nothing about how to build a site from the ground up.

Other gripes:
* Concepts are explained poorly.
* Explanations of new terms are often tautological. For example, when defining class selectors for the first time, the book says, "They let you define a class that you can apply to multiple elements using a class attribute." And that's it. That's your definition of a class. No more explanations are provided.
* The book tells you what decisions to make, but not why you should make them. You are told to never do certain things in Dreamweaver, but without being told why not. It seems that the author just wants you to follow his instructions blindly, without questioning the rationale or the context for what he is saying.
* While many key actions are illustrated with screen shots, not all of them are.
* Errors galore!

If I had a birdcage or a kitty litter box, I would use the pages of this book to line them. Unfortunately, I have neither a bird nor a cat. Looks like this horrible book is going in the trash.

Summary: A perfect book for beginners
Comment: What I liked about this book that it went thru detail on explaining some of the terminlogy so that you can understand and comprehend the subject. The exercises are simple but again it's well worth it.

For someone with very general knowledge about web-sites this book will definitly get you going with Dreamweaver.
